The human gene editing technology faces ethical challenge

The development in the science and technology reached at the new level when mankind started defeating nature through it. The modern scientists are facing ethical dilemma about new level of experiments which require human subjects and sometimes children. The scientists are even planning to produce designer babies, which will allow parents to customize the baby as per required features. Other challenge scientists face it to choose between their commitment to develop science or ethics.

The leading scientific institute in the United States has decided to form guidelines to control new genetic technology. CRISPR-Cas9 is the technology which enables scientists to edit any gene available. Biological word processing program has power to delete all genetic defects in the baby.  Startup companies and universities are having tough battle in getting patents of this technology, which can be very profitable. The world of biology has shaken from within due to this invention and has triggered intense discussions. The DNA technology was the last ground breaking invention in this domain. It was developed in the decade of 1970s and 80s. This also created thriving biotechnology industry.

But the CRISPR has some serious ethical concern and has potential to kill gene diversity in the human beings.  The Chinese scientists informed last month that the team is using CRISPR to edit the genes of human embryos. The embryos couldn’t have developed into human babies as it was not viable but human genes alteration is about to come in near future.  National Academy of Sciences along with the help of Institute of Medicine plans to arrange an international summit to explore policy issues with the new technology.
