Volcanic pipes to host cities on the Moon

Volcanic pipes to host cities on the Moon

The fantasies of novelists and scientist are finally becoming true. Man is all set to colonize the moon and even we have science fiction like sketches about the cities on the moon. The new study points out that first humans will live in lava tubes on the moon, similar to the one formed by volcanic eruptions on the Earth.

The ancient volcanic features are already present on the Moon. The tubes can save us from the meteorite impacts, extreme temperatures and radiation, which is frequent on the moon. The flowing river of lava creates a pipe like structure as its edges cool down after the eruption from the volcanic mountain.

As the lava drains, the hollow tunnel is formed due to the volcanic activity. The researcher Jay Melosh from the Purdue University was a lead scientist on this particular research. Some debates are also there which question the existence of the lava tubes on the moon, but according the researchers, evidences such as sinuous rilles on the lunar surface suggests that there might be giant lava tubes present on the Moon.

The sinuous rilles are formed by lava flows on the Moon’s surface. The diameter of the each rilles is around 10 kilometers and the scientists predicted that lava tubes with similar dimensions may exist.

The structural stability of the tube was also examined during the research. The wide tubes of 5,000 meters with strong arch shape have good structural stability according the researcher. The large cities inside lava tubes will be practical on the moon where weathering, erosion and strong gravity are absent.
