We are entering the danger zone

We are entering the danger zone

It is only natural for everything to change and that includes the environment. However, recent studies show that man of all living beings has affected the environment around him the most. The sad news is he hasn't done so in a good way.

According to the study man has taken things to a planetary wide disruption phase from a geological timescale point of view. The research was led by Will Steffen (Stockholm Resilience Center and Australian National University) and the bottom line is that our highly industrialized civilization has taken several key planetary processes to high-risk state.

It's a fact that human civilization needs the planet to remain in at least approximately Holocene conditions. Holocene is the name given to the period marking the last 11,000 years and the main characteristic of the Holocene is that climate conditions were very stable. However it seems that man is going out of his way to disturb that balance.

In 2009 a list containing nine human-determined changes that affect the Earth system was put together. Now with this paper Steffen expand the definition of “Earth system” by adding biodiversity integrity and climate change.

On the political stage this is the first year that representatives of different nations will gather in order for each to present individual proposals for the targets of carbon emission reduction. This will be happening in December and is called Conference of the Parties.
The target of the above mentioned study is to make officials in the meeting understand just how far things have gone and how this directly affects our life and prospect of living.
