On July 1st, many scientists as well as research institutes in Greece woke up to the rude shock that they no longer have access to the Internet portal that provides them with all the necessary electronic journals that they need. According to reports, the main reason as to why this happen was due to the fact, that the government is yet to provide the necessary funds needed so as to keep it running.
The stormy economic situations in Greece has affected a number of institutions and people and among those affected also include the scientists. Over the last decade Greek’s Hellenic Academic Libraries Link have been faced with the reality of closing down and now that particular threat is becoming a reality as the government is yet to release the necessary funds. As opposed to other times where the government would release money on the last minute, this time around they are afraid that this will not happen given the state that the country is in at the moment.
On July the 1st, Greece ended up defaulting on repayment of a very critical debt that they had acquired from the International Monetary Fund and as a result all the banks in the country ended up closing so as to forestall any financial panic that might strike the country. That said, the people in Greece have a very tough decision to make on July 5th as they are set to vote whether they should remain in the European Union or not.
